I'm climbing.

Taking the Giants at -2 right now.
The jets had a tough time adjusting to Pennington and he had a tough time adjusting to them in his return last week against philly - even though he moved the ball from time to time - he wasnt able to finish the job for whatever reason. The G men had lost a couple tough ones prior to their win this past week over the vikes and the jets had won a couple before losing to the eagles. I think that the giants will take this opportunity to get the running game going - and that will open it up for Kerry Collins. I dont think he'll throw for 375 yards again this week but I dont think he'll have to. The Jets have allowed the league worst 159 yds per game rushing (tied with oakland) with opponents like Dallas, Houston, NE, and Washington - not often atop the rushing stat column (granted ricky williams alone had 125 of those yards - but not significant considering they probably keyed on him more than they did against their other opponents).

Then there is always that chance that the Giants will get a huge early lead like they are known for then blow it towards the end. I'm betting that they won't.

The Jets simply have to become more effective playing run defense.

The Jets are 2-5, and in all five of these defeats their defense has surrendered at least 140 yards rushing.

Here is a quick look at some of these numbers:

In Week One against Washington , the Jets gave up 160 yards rushing. Game Two against Miami - 187 yards. Game Three at New England - 147 yards. Then came the worst of all, Game Four against Dallas. The Cowboys torched the Jets defense for 202 yards rushing.

On Sunday, the Eagles also punished Gang Green's run defense, when they ran 32 times for 194 yards. This effort was good for an average of 6.1 yards per attempt. That is not a very good statistic, especially when one takes into consideration that the Eagles came into the contest with the worst ranked offense in the NFC.

"We were out of position at times, and just missed some tackles," said Herman Edwards on Monday, about his team's performance in Philadelphia. "There's nothing you can do as a coach. You can't tackle a guy for [the players]. They have to be able to tackle the guy. I told them today you have to be able to do [tackle] for a whole game. I wish I had the answer for it, but I don't."

Well, the Jets players certainly do have an answer for it, and they don't have to look very far for the culprit.

"It is us, you can tell it is us when everyone is running for over 127 yards on us," said starting strong safety Sam Garnes .

"For Tiki Barber this game next weekend is a stat game for him, any good player looks at it that way," said Garnes. "The Giants are going to try to run the ball against us. They want to win the game, and they will see that a team is giving up 150 yards a game, and they are going to run the ball."

Garnes probably has a point.

The Giants running backs probably are looking to this game at the Meadowlands on Sunday, as an opportunity to pad their stats. And why shouldn't they? The Jets defense, and their linebackers in particular, have been ineffective all season tackling running backs.

All the Giants will have to do is look at last week's game tape, and see their ineffectiveness bringing down the ball carrier. The atrocious tackling of the Jets linebackers led to two Eagles touchdowns on Sunday.

Marvin Jones had an opportunity to bring down Philadelphia running back Correll Buckhalter on his first touchdown run. However, Jones was unsuccessful and Buckhalter ran past him and scored from six yards out.

On Buckhalter's second touchdown run, this one from seven yards out, Mo Lewis simply ran by the running back, as he strolled into the end zone.

Missing tackles is a fixable problem, but it is not the only one facing this defense.

As Edward's eluded too before, the Jets have been out of position on numerous occasions this season while playing run defense. It's called gap control.

When a player is out of their gap, it often allows opposing running backs to have a clear lane to run past the defensive lineman and linebackers, free into the secondary.

"From a defensive standpoint I would say our front seven has to play better, and be more consistent," said linebacker Sam Cowart . "When we can do it for four quarters, and stay in our gaps, we can get it done.

"Being in the gap is real important. If a guy is not there it is going to be a big gain. Our front seven or eight are all responsible to be in a certain gap, and when someone is out of their gap the next guy to bring down the ball carrier is the safety."

Having safeties make the tackle is something that is happening far too frequently this season, as the Jets front seven has let opposing running backs break free into the secondary on many occasions.

It is so bad now, that when teams scheme for the Jets, they don't even have to worry about throwing the ball.

The head coach is painfully aware of this pitiful situation.

"[Our team] is number one against the pass, because everyone runs the ball," said Edwards."

NO QB CONTROVERSY

Chad Pennington will be the starter this weekend against the Giants. The days of bringing in two quarterbacks are over for Gang Green, unless Pennington needs a rest this weekend.

"There will be one starting quarterback, believe me," said Edwards. "We are not rotating."

DOCTORS ROOM

Jon McGraw and Donnie Abraham are still each at least two weeks away from returning to the lineup.

John Abraham is undergoing an MRI today, and it is possible he could play this weekend as his injury might not be as serious as first reported. Edwards said as of Monday afternoon it was a strained groin.

Mo Lewis is not 100 % and it is very possible that Victor Hobson will play more this weekend.

"We don't need to put Mo out there if he is hurting and can't play at full speed, and obviously Victor Hobson has to play more.

Barber taking passes out of the backfield will give The Jets fits. With Abrahams out, Collins will have plenty of time to shread their injured secondary.

All we need now for the win is you to remember to turn the pillow over tonight.

On a more serious note, You can count yourself a winner already with the new baby and new house, I have friends who have lost both in recent Weeks.

Good Luck Sunday.

I thought he might have played bettter last week, but no Laverneus and the going against the Eagles defense and maybe rust kept him honest... this week he might break out but I don't necessarily expect him to have a 100 quarterback rating, just wouldn't be surprised is all.

How is the giants secondary?

I see that the team is in the middle of the pack in pass defense... I didnt realize the jets pass D was 1st in yards per game!!!

Crap.

Then again the Jets run defense is tied for last with OAKLAND... So teams dont need to pass against the jets.

An interesting stat that somewhat quantifies that statement is attemps against: The jets average the league BOTTOM in pass attempts against at 25 per game.

Also - on an unrelated note, I see that the jets have a league low in turnovers having only turned over the ball 6 times all season!!!

THE GIANTS HAVE 18 TURNOVERS!!!

10 interceptions and 8 fumbles!!!

Holy COW

You asked for a reason to take the Jets. I just have reasons to stay away from this ugly contest. One reson is that you don't ask bad teams(Giants) to win you money. Not only are the Giants bad they are an inconsitent team. They played their best game of the season against Minny and now they might play their worse game of the season against the Jets. Who knows. Good Luck anyways.

Pennington wasn't horrible against the Birds - a RB fumble and one INT killed long drives. The INT was a great play by Michael Lewis - otherwise he had them in eagles territory most of the time. I actually thought for being on the road going against a decent secondary with crap for WR he did ok.

Who are you kidding?

Pennington had 2 good drives and did nothing after that. His final drive in the 4th quarter started out good but went nowhere - as he couldn't get the ball down the field.

Vinny led them to 10 points in the first quarter, then pennington bumbled around for the better part of 3 quarters. Granted the team around him had a lot to do with the failure...

And the eagles even had some injuries that looked like it would make it easier for the jets.

and also - HE THREW THE BALL

I know that good plays can be made by the D but he did put the ball where it needed to be for the interception to be made...

I will agree on one point. He did do OK

Keep in mind that if Moss doesnt fumble inside the 10 last week, the jets may win that game. What if JP comes out gunz blazing this week, and god help new york if collins gets picked off this week. Should be interesting regardless.

Inside the 10?

I thought the fumble was on the 20 yard line?

"1-10-PHI20 (1:10) C.Pennington pass to S.Moss to PHI 23 for -3 yards (C.Emmons). FUMBLES (C.Emmons), RECOVERED by PHI-Ik.Reese at PHI 22."

It actually looks like the play had negative yardage to begin with - I didnt see that play... Was it a screen pass?

Even if they scored there they would have only been ahead by 3 - and the Eagles won the game by 7...

So maybe the Jets would have played differently and maybe they would have given themselves a better chance to win but I'm not convinced that they would have won the game and I'm not convinced that it matters.

The Giants may not be all that it sounds like I'm making them out to be but the Jets havent proven that they aare so great either:

The Giants beat St louis, Washington, and Minnesota...

And they lost to Parcells, the Pats, Miami, and the eagles.

The Jets have lost to Washington, The pats, Parcells, Miami, and philly.

They did beat buffalo (at home) and houston (on the road)

and I think that the giants have performed better.

Do you agree? A little?

I Agree completely...and u right about the 20 yard line fumble, I knew I had to be embellishing. Soon as I knew the giants were playing the jets this week, I was on them until 2 things occurred to me. Number 1 - everybodys on them this week

Number 2 - Pennington..ends up finding himself.

Truth be Told Those arent even good enuf reasons but I do think if Pennington gets it back and collins turns it over...jets have a chance.

Agreed - I think it all comes down to pennington.

If he plays like vinny has been playing then I think they may keep the game interesting - but I dont know that they would win.

The only way the jets win is if they perform better than they have thus far this season.

The team (the jets) would have to bring their best showing of the season without a doubt to win - and it will hinge on turnovers.

Maybe they will but i believe that is what it comes down to.

I have placed my bet on the giants and I hope im right.
